Explaining those big words

Christians can often use big words with big meanings! Not everyone understands them, so this page is to help you understand some of them.

If you've come across one of those "big words" on our site and your not sure what it really means, then feel free to email us and ask!

Baptism

When it's used in the Bible, the word "baptism" generally means "immersion", not sprinkling. It carries the picture of being completely covered. When Christians are baptised by immersion, their whole body goes under the water.

Bible

The word bible comes from a Greek word which simply means 'books'. Christians believe that the Bible is not just any book, but the book which contains God's words to us.

Bible References

Each book in the bible is split into chapters and then a number of verses. So if you see ‘Genesis 12:2’ it means the book called Genesis, the 12th chapter of Genesis, and the 2nd verse of that chapter. You don’t need to memorise all the books in the Bible, all Bibles have an index page!

Born Again

Jesus spoke about a second birth. It is is not a physical birth but a spiritual birth. This is what being born again means. Getting a new, spiritual life.

Communion

This is when Christians meet to remember the death of Jesus by sipping wine (a symbol of his blood) and eating a small wafer, or piece of bread (a symbol of his body).

Divine

This means it has to do with God, or it is from God or it is like God.

Gospel

This word means 'good news' and in the Christian faith it is the message about Jesus.

Grace

God offers us a free gift of a changed life, freedom from guilt, and a clear conscience. And we don't have to do anything to earn it. In fact, we can't...If we could earn it, it wouldn't be a gift.

Justification

This is a legal term, which talks about the legal aspect of salvation. Every one of us stands guilty before God, because we have broken His law. When God justifies a person, He declares that person to be in right standing before Him

Repentance

Repentance means a change of mind and a change of life. When someone repents from their sin they make a deliberate decision to turn away from sin, and to turn towards God.

Resurrection

This means to 'stand up again'. Jesus dies and then came back to life and he lives for ever. He has promised that the same will happen to his followers.

Sin

Not many people use this word any more, it simply means breaking God's laws
